A Summer of Learning and Growth: Kelvin's reflections

Tell us about yourself.

Hi! My name is Kelvin and I am a MSc in Finance student at University College Cork.

I am delighted to be the inaugural beneficiary of the partnership between PKF Brenson Lawlor and University College Cork that has seen me undertake my summer internship at this prestigious firm.

What was involved in your Corporate Finance internship?

PKF Brenson Lawlor has offered me an enriching experience, with multifaceted insights into representing clients with diverse local and international operations. As part of the Corporate Finance team, I have particularly enjoyed the hands-on experience, the mentorship from my seniors, the teamwork and exposure gained from the each of my well-versed and professional colleagues. The opportunity to work directly with the Partner and the Directors gave me a deeper understanding of the rigors of management and the great deal of excellence and detail that goes into the service delivery.

Beyond my daily duties, I have built and expanded my professional network from the numerous engagements with colleagues across the firm and the industry, through work assignments and social events, which has increased my scope of knowledge and perspective, and impacts my career positively.

Describe your internship in three words.

If I were to describe my internship in three words, they would be: enriching, specialized and captivating.

What are your top three take aways from your summer internship?

1.       The importance of being open and inquisitive to harness the rich experience and perspective within the team. I have received hands-on training from industry experts which has honed my skillset that sets me up for continued success.

2.      Every assignment is distinct and provides a blank canvas for learning and applying, not only the SOPs, but also new ideas and approaches that lead it to closure. I have learnt to be open to taking up new challenges, thinking out of the box and being creative, and having the confidence to go for it.

3.       The importance of choosing the right internship at the right firm. The proximity to management, one-on-one mentorship and assistance received from all the team members, in individual and team assignments, has been immense.
